"Wishing Everyone a Very Blessed Easter"
"A man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them." Matt 25:14
Jesus tells a story about a wealthy man who commends his money to three servants before leaving on a journey. Two servants manage to double the money. A third servant fears losing the money, so he digs a hole and buries it. The first two regard the property and possession as an opportunity. The third sees it as a problem. Jesus' parable reminds us that God has entrusted each one of us with gifts, including money, time, abilities and relationships. Sometimes we may see these gifts as opportunities. Other times, like the third servant, we may regard God's gifts as burdens.
In Jesus' parable, two people risk everything and turn a profit. The third risks nothing and loses an opportunity. There is another possibility not mentioned in the story - a person who risks all and loses. One suspects Jesus does not include such a person because when we invest God's gifts for glory, we cannot lose. Jesus parable reminds us that everything God has given us no matter how large or small, provides an opportunity to better the world.
